Where can I find the app?

Do The Thing is currently in beta, so it won't show up in the regular App Store. Click the button below to install Do The Thing for iOS via Apple's TestFlight.

Are there a web or Android versions?

Unfortunately, no. I know people are mad. All I can say is, try not to take it personally. I want web and Android versions with cross-platform syncing as much as the next guy. As soon as I can offer it, I will.

However, I'm a single developer. Do The Thing is my passion project. I don't have the skills or resources to bring the app to platforms outside iOS at this time. An App Store release (i.e. getting the iOS app out of beta) will be the first step to changing that.

This app has been in beta for a long time. Is it still in active development?

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: I had to stop work on Do The Thing in 2020, right when I was gearing up to get it ready for its App Store debut. I'm only one person, and when I became responsible for supervising my kid's virtual school for a year and a half during the pandemic, it was just too much. I've maintained the app at a basic level since then because I need it to manage my own life and to-do list. However, I had to prioritize my established, paying work over this passion project.

As of fall 2023, active development has finally resumed. I'm cleaning up bugs, adding a couple new features, and aiming for an App Store release in 2024. I really appreciate everyone's patience.

My project's next actions display in a random order. How can I fix this?

You can't.

Do The Thing is based on David Allen's Getting Things Done. Under this model, any next action can be done at any time, given the right context. If a task requires you to do something else first, it's not a next action. Do The Thing determines the order of your next actions list based on factors like priority, expiration date, and how long ago you added a task to the list.

I'm working on some ideas to make this clearer and easier. Future versions of Do The Thing may include a new task status specifically for blocked/deferred/future tasks, with an option to automatically move them to next actions as their blockers are completed. For now, I recommend using the Reference/Notes status to store tasks that can't be done yet. If you need to preserve the order, try a numbered list in the Notes field of a single Reference/Notes task.

How do I get rid of a context I no longer use?

Contexts can be added, edited, deleted, or merged via the Tools tab.

I have a single task I need to do anytime after a specific date (I can't work on it before then). Is there a way to "snooze" it so it automatically appears in my next actions list on that date?

Not yet! I really want this feature, too. Fortunately, a lot of the infrastructure already exists behind the scenes. It'll take a little while to do it right, but rest assured, you will see snooze-able tasks in the future.

I'm having a little trouble getting started. Do you have a video tutorial?

Nope, sorry. New installs of Do The Thing include a starter task with some basic information. I'd love to have a series of tutorial videos, but Do The Thing is not my full-time job and I need to prioritize work on the actual app over supplementary content.
